Things To Do With A Powerful Computer

  1. Talking Fun stuff to do with a powerful Desktop Computer

I recently set myself up a powerful rig. but you see, when i attempted to do some gaming with my new rig, i found out that gaming was not fun for me anymore.

So i wondered - what other fun things i can do with a powerful rig ? i already listen to music in high definition (high bitrate, high sampling resolution etc) for example.

but there has to be other fun stuff to do with a powerful computer right ?

can anyone give any ideas ?

  2. Heres a few things...

    Benchmarks
    Distributed computing projects
    HD video encoding
    High-end 3d rendering

  3. Mine yourself some Bitcoin.

  4. make it into a Virtual server so you can run multiple things on it.

Seems a shame to waste those CPU cycles.

Play old games. Some have received facelifts from fan-made texture packs and modifications, if you feel like using at least some of all that computing power you have there.

  6. You can scan it for viruses once or more every day, using two different antivirus/antispyware at the same time.

You can get an advanced defragment software that runs in the background (if you use SSD you probably don't need this).

You can use a torrent software and seed all the day.

And editing HD videos for Youtube in some topic that you like takes a lot of resources.

  7. what else ?

    some 'visual' stuff maybe ?

  8. Not Desktop, my Lenovo G770, cpu replaced with i7-2720QM(ES), runs benchmark and several VirtualBox.

There's many different kinds of gaming, such a general word. There's things I don't like and things I do. Maybe you just haven't found the right genre, game, or series?

  10. You can use Paint in hi def.

Or if you're like me, you have Chrome and Firefox open with a dozen+ tabs open in each. I'm horrible about that, and the bad thing is that two or three of them are usually WHT tabs.

    Etc.

  12. see, i got an idea a little while ago :

imagine a 3d app in which there is a virtual hill, a big, realistic, max detail rendered tree with leaves that are swaying with realistic wind, with a realistic scenery in the horizon and with real-life illumination.

how cool it would be to watch such an applet run ?

i asked around to a few friends but noone knew one. is it possible that one of you may have seen something like this ?

ehh i dont see the fun in that personally. its probably hobby for some.

  14. How powerful a desktop are we talking about?

  15. You could always create your own web crawler and index the internet, it may get your IP blacklisted by some overzealous admins. I love benchmarking but I also do Seti@HOME. I also tried mining bitcoin but I was a little less than impressed with it. I just built a rig with 16GB of ram for virtual machine testing.

  16. i downloaded blender and arbaro tree generator and decided to do the tree scenery myself. thank you.

doooh. where is the visual fun in that.

  19. Bitcoin used to be so easy to mine but no longer, it is nearly impossible for a desktop even a very powerful one with a great graphics card. Those that can still get some of these coins are usually rigs, but your room will be extremely hot. Can put in a datacenter but then it is no longer a "desktop"
